English conversation practice for everyday situations

Start with a short task instead of a broad instruction to “teach me English.” Try one of these prompts with your tutor:

• Meeting a colleague: “You are a new colleague. Ask me about my job, then ask a follow-up question.” Practise introducing your role and asking about theirs.
• Ordering food: “You work in a café. Ask what I would like and check whether I want anything else.” Practise “Could I have…?” and “Does that come with…?”
• Preparing for an interview: “Ask me about a project I worked on. Ask one question at a time.” Give a specific example, explain your contribution, and describe the result.

These are suggested exercises, not transcripts or promises of a particular tutor response. You can change the topic and difficulty to match your needs.

Use pronunciation feedback to make your next answer clearer

After speaking, review the feedback and choose one word or phrase to repeat. For example, practise the difference between “ship” and “sheep,” or stress the important words in “I asked for the blue one.” Then use the phrase in a new answer so that the practice transfers to conversation.

A simple routine for beginners and intermediate learners

Beginner: Introduce yourself in two or three sentences. Ask for one short question at a time. Repeat useful phrases, then change a detail such as your city or hobby.

Intermediate: Describe a recent event, explain an opinion, or solve a practical problem. Ask the tutor to challenge your answer with a follow-up question. Try again with fewer pauses or a more precise word.

Use a ten-minute session: two minutes to prepare, five to talk, and three to review and repeat. Regular practice gives you more chances to notice what needs work; progress varies by learner.

American English or British English?

Both can help you communicate internationally. This page focuses on American English; choose British English practice if that better matches your work, study or travel. Pay attention to vocabulary and pronunciation differences without treating either variety as the only correct English.
